Hoe Valley School is different to other schools in a number of ways:

• As a smaller than average secondary school we know our students’ strengths and talents and the areas they need to develop. This means we can personalise the curriculum and the enrichment programme and make sure that no student slips through the net.
• We have the highest academic expectations for all our students. We expect them to make four levels of progress between joining the school and their year 11 examinations which is significantly higher than the national average.
• We offer an extended school day. This means we can deliver an academically rigorous range of subjects along with additional time for English and Maths. Our students will be highly literate and numerate and can access other areas of the curriculum in more depth and with a critical and questioning mind. They also have the time to pursue their interests in sports, languages and the arts.
• Cross-curricular projects are built into the school day. This ensures students are applying their academic learning to real life contexts, exposes them to different potential career paths and prepares them for the world of higher education and work.
• We believe all our students are gifted and that it is the job of our school to identify and develop their talents within and beyond the curriculum.

Our staff feedback shows we have a team who feel trusted, listened to and who have a healthy work life balance. The excellent behaviour of our students and our resistance to any unnecessary paperwork means staff can really focus on teaching and learning. All of our team have a bespoke CPD programme in place and share best practice across faculties.

Our staff are offered reduced gym membership at Sportsbox, our neighbouring sports facility, cycle to work scheme and have access to on site free parking. We also have additional holiday time to recognise and reward the commitment of our staff.

Adjacent to the site is Woking Sportsbox run by Freedom Leisure. The School has access to a range of indoor and outdoor pitches and games areas as well as the best 400m athletics track in the region.

Surrey is a county of contrasts. Only a short journey from London, it also offers a quick escape into peaceful countryside. This pleasant environment is combined with transport links that include the M3, M23 and M25 motorways, road and rail to London, and easy access to Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

In spite of a population of just over a million in a comparatively small area of 650 square miles, 80% of the county is farmland, woods, heath and open land. Although Surrey is a wealthy county, there are areas of relative poverty, particularly around some of the larger towns and a number of schools have pupils with a wide diversity of nationalities, cultures and languages.

Booming economy
There have recently been several major town centre redevelopments in Surrey. In the field of education and research, centres include Royal Holloway University (London) at Egham and Surrey University at Guildford. New research related technologies are also represented at Surrey University's research park and many multinational companies continue to relocate from London to Surrey.

Environmental issues
In Surrey there is a need to balance environmental conservation with the requirement for more homes, roads and commercial development.

For teachers in schools interested in green issues, Surrey County Council promotes environmental awareness with a wide range of initiatives to develop pupils' knowledge and experience.

Tourism and leisure

Surrey provides a wealth of contrasting leisure activities. Among the historic sites are Hampton Court Palace and Runnymede, as well as National Trust properties such as Clandon and Polesden Lacey. Other attractions include picturesque villages, gardens, such as Wisley, racecourses and river trips. Surrey also has seven major arts venues.

Sports centres are also plentiful, among them the Spectrum Centre in Guildford, probably the most exciting leisure complex in the UK. Other first-class facilities are available in Camberley, Egham, Lingfield and Oxted.

For cyclists and walkers there is an extensive network of footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes and Surrey also boasts high-quality shopping malls, particularly in Kingston, Guildford and Camberley.

Travel
Surrey has good road and rail links to London, Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

Health and safety in the School is a priority and we have procedures in place to minimise the risk of exposure (social distancing, walking on the left, reduced capacity in the dining area, enhanced cleaning, keeping windows open). Our recent risk assessment by the HSC Public Health Agency confirmed we are providing a Covid secure environment.
